Dalinar the Blackthorn by Somnicide Dalinar the Blackthorn by Somnicide
Before I say anything else, I'd like to first point out that if you are in to the epic fantasy genre and havent read any of Brandon Sandersons works...please do yourself a favor and pick up Mistborn or Warbreaker. I honestly can not sing enough praise for Sanderson, but there are other forums for that.

In terms of the piece, this is Dalinar in his Shardplate during the greatshell hunt. My mental image of the chasmfiend may be slightly different from others. Most would imagine it with a more lobster-like head, but I had always imagined them as a mix between a gigantic snapping turtle and a crab. The book only had the head description as: An arrowhead shape, with green eyes with a mouth full of mandibles.

I tried to keep Dalinar's armor true to the soldier image, as opposed to the beautifully decorated Shardplate that a normal Alethi General would wear. The Kholin blue cape flying behind. Cheers to the most badass Highprince on the Shattered Plains. I plan to do more Cosmere fan art soonish. I'm thinking either Kaladin, or Vasher with Nightblood. Be on the look out for those C:

Dang, you have a lot of amazing art. Like you point out, this is a different depiction of a chasm feind, but I think it as viable as others no problem. i absolutely love the shard plate, it looks amazing in this scene! Thank you for making this.

I also have a question for you. I am a YouTuber, and I'm just about to start a massive series on Brandon Sanderson's cosmere. I have consulted and received his support to make this series. I will be doing a vocal performance while depicting various art projects made by fans of the series. I would love to use your works as well if that is permissible. I would never use your projects without your permission and I would also ask that you tell me what website or URL you would like me to link in any videos I use.

If you do not feel comfortable with me using your works, no worries. I'll still be looking for your future works!

Keep up the good work!

You should do art of when Dalinar saves Elkohar from the chasmfiend by catching its limb.

This is an amazing piece of art, one of my favorite TWOK fan creations. I pictured the chasmfiend as more of a lobster myself, as you said, and it's unfortunate that it wasn't described better int he book. Either way, you painted a picture much more epic than my mind ever could, and for that, I will think of this every time chasmfiends come up.

As a sidenote, on the cover of Whelan's cover art, the flag bears the silhouette of a much more lobster like chasmfiend, including antennae, but with the a rounder body much like a turtle. Regardless, thank you for this incredible piece of art.

I love that you have such a unique vision of the Chasm-fiend. I have to say this is sheer epicness on multiple levels. Since you're a Sanderson Fan I'm looking forward to mire of you're takes on the characters.

I love the drawing, and if I haven't read the book, I would stop there. But I must criticize a few points if you care to read. heheh...Sorry if I bother you.
As you stated, each person's mental images are different, so I will only point out the facts.

The shardblade should be smoking/misting.
I imagine Dalinar's armor is a bit more bland, darker, and gray (as he doesn't paint his plates like other shardbearers); instead of this intricate Ironman-lookalike you drew.
The blue cape is perfect however.

Amazing. Was Oathbringer based on FFX's Brotherhood? Because, and not really spoilers, that would actually be pretty cool, reference-wise.

Omg - if you're going to do Kaladin (and Syl, presumably), are you going to do THAT scene? After he says the words? Because you would be my favorite person.

Also, grats on getting noticed by Sanderson!

so cool! I wanted to do one of him holding the gemheart above his head with glory spren all around him and the chasmfiend dead in the back, but I couldn't quite picture how I wanted it to look.
Now I can totally picture it.
Krafus Featured By Owner Aug 5, 2012
An absolutely beautiful work of art. The details of the armor and the chasmfiend are stunning, and the environment and lighting further enrich the scene. In particular, I love the play of light on Dalinar's armor. About his Shardplate - I believe it was mentioned in the book that he keeps it an undecorated, flat grey, and that he doesn't bother removing its dents and scars.

Oh, I hope your next fan art piece will be Kaladin. I would love to see your rendition of him performing his kata in the chasm with Syl zipping about him, or in a badass pose right after saying the Second Ideal. *crosses fingers*

Your work was amazing!I love Brandon Sandersons book so much and I'm so glad can see the good Fanart of his book.
Dalinar's cape is so beautiful.Blue cape and warm color background formed a impressive contrast. His armor had many details, I liked the design!

Sorry for my poor English, I just wanted to say...I felt so touched from this work,it show many things which I imagined from this book.

I haven't read anything by Sandersons yet, I'll have to check it out, but to me the desert like atmosphere and numerous teeth of the creature are reminiscent of Dune, which was one of my favorite book series. Great piece!
Oh my gosh this is awesome, the world needs far more Warbreaker fan art than it currently has. So amazing!!! :iconcannotevenplz:
CabbyHat Featured By Owner Jul 8, 2012
That is supremely cool. The intricacy and attention you put into the chasmfiend and the shardplate really capture the epic feel of the scene, even if they're a little bit creatively interpreted. :)

I also love the way that everything's tilting towards the chasmfiend's mouth, like Dalinar's about to be sucked in if he loses his balance. Really helps to get the scale and sense of fear across.

Wow, what an awesome picture of Dalinar! He looks ready to kick some serious shell. This is great!
Inkthinker Featured By Owner Jul 6, 2012  Professional Digital Artist
Nice!! Chasmfiends are distantly related to Axehounds (I'm not sure if that's clear in the book), and the snapping turtle was a central part of that design (snapping turtles, lobsters, and a bit of dog/wolf in terms of body language).

The chasmfiend's legs would need to be slender enough to be cut through (or at least deeply into) as that's central to the strategy Dalinar/Andolin/Elkohar use when fighting 'em, and in general it needs to be sized in such a way that it can move around in the chasms between the plateaus, but I dig your basic premise.

You're right on Dalinar as well, his armor is purposefully plain and utilitarian. Fancy decoration is more Sadeas's thing.

Good stuff! I look forward to seeing more!
